It’s September and the heat is on. The many days of three-digit temperatures are over, we hope. The heat sure has been on the minds and hearts of our families and visitors. As you enter our Mountain View Cemetery through our Fair Oaks gate, the shade trees leading up to our office have helped everyone keep a little cooler.

It seems like more and more our visitors are asking about our history. We’ve been here since 1882.All the movers and shakers of early California and Altadena are here. We have over seven hundred Union Civil War graves and around seventy-two Confederates resting here at Mountain View. Celebrity graves include Cal-Tech Physicist Richard Feynman and 50’s TV Superman, George Reeves and many more.

Our history includes our Mother Mausoleum on Marengo Avenue, an Altadena landmark since 1925. As you walk along, you’ll see our ceiling fresco “The History of Christianity” a 180-foot-long story of The Christ. The ornate Stained-Glass graces our windows and gives one the feeling of a sacred journey to the Vatican. Many locals refer to our historic mausoleum as Altadena’s Sistine Chapel.

Labor Day this year was a special event here at Mountain View. Our own Pastor Nate , Keith, Elizabeth and Erika organized a special Labor Day luncheon, and it was wonderful to break bread and say hello as we celebrated our national holiday. The food and the fellowship were awesome, as were the games and fun activities. The kids sure had fun with the Super-Soakers and all those bubbles! Thanks guys.

With so much heat in the last few weeks, we decided to go back into our Mountain View Blog archives and take a look at our historic cemetery, when the rains came. Hope you enjoy the look-back, rain-swept digital photo we found. Fall is ahead and summer is behind us, but a few hot Indian Summer days are ahead. Keep cool.
Till we look out the window here at Mountain View once again…
