July-2024 Looking out the window here at Mountain View once again

It’s July and it’s hot. I guess you could say that it’s a typical July in Southern California. It’s been a hot month since back in the day when we opened our doors. It was 1882. America and California were growing by leaps and bounds and so was Altadena and Pasadena. Citrus and agriculture were becoming more and more of our Altadena landscape.

Those beautiful Jacaranda trees are blooming as they always do during late May, and into June and sometimes July. There’s nothing more inspiring than taking a healthy walk through our Mountain View grounds during the early morning hours and seeing those Jacaranda blooms both on the tree and covering the ground, a blanket of purple against our lush green grass.

Walking through our grounds is always a history lesson. Take a walk just a few steps from our Fair Oaks gate and you’ll find quite a story. It was a time for adventure. 1881. Newton Mohn, 22, a young Marine. Aboard the U.S.S. Marion. A tragic drowning. Buried in Japan and later brought home to Altadena. Pour yourself a cup of Joe and Google this Marine’s epic story.

Altadena in July is always hot and there’s a place you can count on to be cool. It’s our Mother Mausoleum on Marengo Ave. Take a walk on the cool side and enjoy the history, the architecture, the Stained Glass and the cool Marble. It’s Open Seven Days.

We are all missing one of our Mountain View sisters. Staffers Jim and Mariann said goodbye to Maggie May, a canine with a personality that was featured in quite a few of our Mountain View staff and holiday photos. A few moons ago, she made an appearance during an Art Gallery showing in our Mausoleum on Marengo Avenue and, as they say, stole the show. We will all miss her wagging tail and personality-plus colorful sparkly fashion collars. RIP little sweetheart.
Till we look out the window here at Mountain View once again…
