May has come and gone and it was a wonderful month. Starting off the month we joined in a tribute to our best pal and best gal, our mom’s. Our first teacher. Our lifelong cheerleader. It was Mother’s Day. We were busy as ever with all the visitors paying their respects to Moms, Grandmoms and teachers, all the beloved mentors in our lives.

Her name is Carol, and she tells some wonderful stories and was such an animated narrator during our Memorial Day Celebrations. She’s one of the sisters of the Daughters of Union Veterans and her family history goes way back. Carol was joined by historian Nick Smith and Dean Smith of the Sons of Union Veterans and the art of the spoken word was a sight and sound to behold.
Vintage postcards and pictures of post-Civil War Altadena and Pasadena were passed along to audience members. The colorful photos show a glimpse of our California history. They were so wonderful to see and added quite a smile to the spoken history lessons.

Her name was Rachel, and she was a nurse during the Civil War. During our Memorial Day walking tour, historian Nick Smith told us the story of Dr. Rachel, her doctor husband and their efforts to help heal the wounded and their help in distributing medical supplies. Maybe it’s time to visit us here, chat with Rachel and pay your respects.

Red and white Carnations dotted our grounds during our Memorial Day events. A friendly lady named Edie was busy with her fresh carnations. She took her time and placed her flowers on dozens and dozens of Veteran graves here at Mountain View. It was such a community event. Memorial Day is always a very special day here in Altadena.

Mountain View Cemetery is all about history and all about our over 200 species of trees and all about our flowers. We found these gems of color in the garden next to our head office, near our Fair Oaks gate. Stop by and say hello. Bring a friend. We’re open Seven Days.
As the month of May ends and the month of June begins, Remember our mantra. Go Dodgers!
Till we look out the window here at Mountain View once again…
